Suffolk Punch

The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy (ALBC) classifies Suffolk Punch horses as “critical” - less than 2,000 registered world-wide.

The Suffolk Punch originated in the Norfolk and Suffolk counties of Great Britain in the late 1700’s. Of all the draft horse breeds, the Suffolk is the oldest in existence. They were widely used in the United States due to their great stamina, health, longevity, docility and “heart” – the inner determination to push on.

The numbers of Suffolk Punches, as with all draft horses, greatly declined after World War II as tractors took over the labor on the farm. Gilmerton Farm has Fairwinds MacArthur standing at stud and maintains a small breeding program to support this magnificent animal.
